BLACK LIVES MATTER
June 13th, 2020
As an organization committed to promoting civic engagement and empowering Laurentian students to get involved in all levels of politics we felt it was necessary to use our platform to discuss an important issue facing people across the globe.
Over the past few weeks, people of all backgrounds have been taking to the streets to demand justice for George Floyd and the many other Black people who have lost their lives, suffered violence, and faced discrimination based on the colour of their skin.
While we are a non-partisan organization, we believe that racism and the fight for equality is not a partisan issue. Our goal as an organization is to foster an environment that is safe for everyone which is why we want to reassure the Laurentian community that we stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and all efforts to fight racism and discrimination.
We believe that as a community we must stand together in affirming that Black Lives Matter. Now and forever. It is no longer enough to simply be not racist, but rather we must work together to be anti-racist. Condemning behaviour that is harmful and violent towards members of our community.
In an effort to continue to create a space that is safe and inclusive for all students, our team is committed to educating ourselves and actively working towards dismantling our own biases and systems that may lead to further harm.
As we work towards creating a safer environment for all, we encourage each and every person reading this to educate themselves and join us in standing in solidarity with the black community.
